Allan M. Hillani
Graduate Associate
Allan M. Hillani is a Brazilian Ph.D. candidate in the philosophy department of the New School for Social Research in New York. He works on the intersection between political philosophy and contemporary social theory, mobilizing new materialisms, critical theory, and the ontological turn of anthropology to put into question the basic tenets of Western political thought. His dissertation, “The Spell of the Leviathan,” proposes a theory of political fetishism to understand how political relations can take the form of “properties” (like power) and “things” (like the State), thereby producing a specifically modern form of political reality that is far from universal. He also holds a master's degree in theory and philosophy of law from the State University of Rio de Janeiro and a bachelor’s degree in law from the Federal University of Paraná.
