Philippe Xing

Phil Xing is a PhD student in History at the University of Cambridge, specializing in nineteenth-century imperial thought, racial science, and social sciences. His thesis explores theories of “bio-racial civilisation” in transatlantic empires, analyzing how 19th-century racial scientists redefined civilisation through the lens of biology and race. The project intersects and develops the historiography of imperial thought, racial science, and the social sciences. Phil’s work builds on his interdisciplinary training in political thought, global history, and social science. He holds distinctions from the MPhil in Political Thought and Intellectual History (Cambridge), the MSc in Empires, Colonialism and Globalisation (LSE), and the MPhil in International Relations (Oxford). At the LSE, he was awarded the Iris Forrester Prize for academic excellence in the Department of International History. His MPhil dissertation at Cambridge was selected to be deposited in the Seeley Historical Library.
