Thomas Ashby

Thomas Ashby is an intellectual historian of early modern political thought based at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. He primarily works on English republicanism and its afterlives in global context. He is currently a Fellow at the Euronews Project where he investigates the correspondence of Florentine agents in London during the English revolution and republic. He is also developing his PhD research on Algernon Sidney (1623-1683). Alongside his research on English republicanism and its reception, he is also interested in applying the methods of intellectual history to the English encounter with Japan in the late Sengoku and early Edo periods. He currently works on the editorial board of Global Intellectual History. Between 2022 and 2023 he was a Fellow at the Fondazione Luigi Einaudi. He previously convened the EUI Intellectual History Working Group.
